The Rio 2016 Olympic Games are fast approaching and sports fans all around the world cannot wait for them to begin. The preparations are well underway and at the end of the month four club teams from Brazil will compete in the Aquece Rio Handball Men’s Tournament, which will take place in the Future Arena from 29 April to 1 May 2016 and is considered as test event for the Games. On the fringes of the tournament, right before the opening match, the draw for the Rio 2016 Olympic Handball Tournaments will be held.

The top 4 club teams of the Brazilian national league, Pinheiros, Taubaté, Maringa and Itajaí, were chosen to play each other in a single round-robin tournament, which would serve as a test event for the 2016 Olympic Games. It will take place in the Future Arena, which is situated in the Olympic Park in Barra de Tijuca. The arena will be deconstructed after the Games as part of a ‘nomadic architecture’ concept and its parts used to create four public schools.

On 29 April, the groups of the Rio 2016 handball tournaments will be determined. The draw will be held in the press conference room of the Future Arena from 2-3pm, local time, right before the first match of the tournament. Twelve men’s and 12 women’s teams will each be drawn into two groups of six (Group A and Group B in each category) according to their pre-determined performance rows (PR; see below). The draw will start with row 6 and work up to 1, but with the host nation having the right to choose which group it goes into. Row 4, which will feature Brazil, will be determined last.
