The New Zealand Club Championships 2017 were held from September 15 to 17 at the ABS Sports Centre in Wellington, at the end of which Victoria University Ravens celebrated the women’s title while Aguilas raised the men’s trophy.

The Championship was contested between teams from both Australia and New Zealand, with Sparkz – a mixed team from the cities of Wellington and Canterbury – placing second in the women’s competition while Valley Hunters, also a combined side of players from the Hutt Valley and Auckland, ranked third.

In the men’s competition, Canterbury claimed the silver medal ahead of the Vikings. Along with two teams from Victoria University, Otago Men, Auckland and Spartanz, all from New Zealand, HC Wolves from Brisbane, Australia travelled to the event.

The women’s tournament was played in a round-robin format with the top teams qualifying directly for the finals and bronze-medal matches, while the men’s competition began with a group phase before cross-matches to determine the finalists and teams to vie for third place.

The MVP of the women’s tournament was Sam Guard, while Nick Potter received the men’s MVP award. The top goal scorers were Maddie Stephens in the women’s category, and Caleb Gahan in the men’s.

The NZ Club Championships have been held every year since 2005 in the fast-growing handball nation, with the winning teams qualifying for the Oceania Club Championships.
