On 27 February 2018, the Mexican Olympic Committee (Comité Olímpico Mexicano) hosted 16 nations belonging the North America and the Caribbean Handball Confederation (NACHC) in the presence of IHF President Dr Hassan Moustafa. Dr Moustafa was welcomed to the one-day meeting in Mexico City by the chairman of Mexico's Olympic Committee, Carlos Padilla Becerra, where a number of items were on the agenda under the heading ‘Development of Handball in Pan America’. After a welcome and introduction of working groups from both continents – the North America and the Caribbean Handball Confederation and the South and Central America Handball Confederation – numerous discussions took place. President Moustafa briefed the representatives of the NACHC member federations on the disadvantages of the previous system and the benefits of the new system. Again, President Moustafa highlighted that the best interest of the member federations of both continents was the basis for this decision. The analysis of 40 member federations, the IHF classification of the 40 member federations, the current status of 2018 qualification events and detailed information about the future qualification structure, which includes the IHF Trophy as a pathway to IHF Youth and Junior World Championships, IHF Men’s and Women’s World Championships, Olympic Games and IHF Beach Handball World Championships, were presented to the participants. In addition to this, there was a presentation of the projects which might be the most suitable for the region: the IHF Beach Handball Trophy, IHF Emerging Nations tournament and Four-Year Plans, including courses for referees and coaches, development and Handball@School. President Moustafa and the working group chairmen of the North America and the Caribbean Handball Confederation and the South and Central America Handball Confederation were extremely satisfied with the outcome of the meeting and the profound willingness of the member federations to start working on the development of handball in both continents.
