Powerhouses to fight for title and coveted World Championship places at the 2024 South and Central American Women's Handball Championship

The fourth edition of the South and Central American Women's Handball Championship, the premium women’s handball competition on the continent, will take place between 26 and 30 November in Niterói, Brazil, with six teams at the start.

The top three sides will be heading to the 2025 IHF Women’s World Championship, as this is a qualification event for the world handball flagship competition, as six teams are lining up at the start, with Argentina, hosts Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, Paraguay and Uruguay battling for the three podium places.

The reigning champions, Brazil, winners of all the previous three editions, will be heavily favoured to add their fourth crown, having won all the matches played so far since the inaugural edition in 2021, riding a 14-match winning streak. The hosts will be bolstered by a fantastic side, with experienced players like goalkeeper Gabriela Moreschi, centre back Bruna de Paula Almeida and right wing Adriana Cardoso.

“Our objective is to always seal a medal for Brazil. We know the competition is tough, but the objective is to finish as high as possible in every competition we play in,” said Moreschi, a star at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Brazil made it to the quarter-finals, for the official website of the South and Central American Confederation.

With a new coach, Mariano Munoz, who will make his debut in a major international competition, Argentina will be trying to beat Brazil for the first time at the South and Central American Women's Handball Championship, where they always finished second in the previous three editions.

“We will try to qualify for the World Championship and play at the best level possible,” said Argentina’s Rocío Campigli, for the official website of the South and Central American Confederation.

The battle for the bronze and the subsequent place for the IHF Women’s World Championship will be open, as Paraguay finished twice on the third place, in 2018 and 2021, while the 2022 edition saw Chile secure the third place.

The two sides will also be at the start, with big ambitions, therefore the fight will be well-balanced, with El Salvador, making their debut at this level, and Uruguay looking like the underdogs for this edition of the South and Central American premium competition.

“We know the competition will be tough, the level is high, but our objective is to qualify for the World Championship, that’s our big wish,” said Paraguay’s captain, Delyne Leiva, for the official website of the South and Central American Confederation.

The 2024 South and Central American Women's Handball Championship will take place between 26 and 30 November, in a round-robin format, with the team securing the largest number of points in the group clinching the coveted trophy.
